Where Is Their "I?"
Some people, no matter how educated, successful, or affluent have no "I." By "I" I mean a sense of themselves as individuals, as opposed to part of the collective. They base their value on what other people think of them, sometimes regardless of who these other people are. They are, in fact, modern day "Peter Keatings."
One example is people who pay money to be escorted by a party buddy to hip Manhattan night clubs that they couldn't get into on their own -- for $350 to $1,200 per night.
Sounds like groveling to me.
