My Take on the Sick News Stories of the Day

Young Mathew Carrington died as a result of a sadistic fraternity hazing ritual at the Chi Tau fraternity in Chico State:

It was the night of Feb. 1, and for five hours the 21-year-old Pleasant Hill man and a friend pledging the Chico fraternity were allegedly humiliated and doused with gallons of cold water in the basement while being blasted with ice-cold air from giant fans.

They were made to do calisthenics while standing on one foot atop a bench, prosecutors said. Denied the opportunity to use the bathroom, they had to request permission to wet themselves.

Through it all, prosecutors said, fraternity members forced Carrington and his friend to drink gallon after gallon of water until Carrington collapsed as hypothermia set in and his brain stem swelled from the water intoxication that killed him.

This is not the first I've heard of young people literally dying to be accepted by a group. What kind of sickos would encourage a young person to endanger his life, just so that group can condescend to offer him their friendship?

And what is it that's so G-d awful about being alone, that drives young people to such lengths, just to get others to like and be friends with them? (Don't get me wrong, it's not just today, but even when I was in college.)

Here's another sick one.

A sixteen year old girl, who decided in her fourth month of pregnancy, that she should have aborted her twins, asked her boyfriend to help her our by stepping on her stomach.

But it wasn't that simple. Miss Basoria told authorities she had been trying to kill the fetuses for weeks and finally asked Mr. Flores to help by stepping on her stomach.

"When I was four months pregnant, I began to show, and at that time I decided that I should have gotten an abortion," Miss Basoria wrote in an affidavit.

Hate to break it to you, but that's what happens when you get pregnant -- you show!! If you don't want a baby growing inside you, then don't have sex.

The kicker here is that the boyfriend is being charged, but not the girl.

I find this type of thing especially repugnant since I have friends who have had trouble conceiving and who have had several miscarriages. I remember getting a call years ago from an old friend who'd had a miscarriage. In an effort to console her, her family and friends kept telling her it was G-d's will. But my friend wasn't buying it. She wanted to know why it had to happen to her, when there were plenty of people that couldn't care less about their children. I just didn't know what to say to her.

On another note, a Pennsylvania judge lightened the sentence of rapist professor, and director of Penn's Head Injury Research Center Tracy McIntosh due to his "important work" with victims of stroke and brain injuries.

Talk about activist judges!
